Speaking for conventions, conferences, or small groups is a powerful way for entrepreneurs to grow their business.
In addition to attending tons of conferences over the years, I’ve been speaking at workshops, expos, and events for almost ten years. Since I’ve gotten so much out of speaking, here are the top five reasons why you should be speaking to grow your business.
1. Establish your expertise.
First things first, speaking will put you in front of a group of people – whether big or small – and allow you to showcase yourself as the expert in your niche.
The takeaway here is to make sure you speak on a topic you feel comfortable talking about, with the ability to answer your audience’s questions on the subject.
2. Practice (and perfect) your pitch.
At the same time, there is always room for practice. I personally find that speaking offers a wonderful opportunity for streamlining your “elevator pitch,” sales pitch, or simply the way you explain a certain concept.
What’s more is the more you speak, the more comfortable you’ll be with your pitch.
3. Grow your reach.
Every speaking opportunity offers you the benefit of putting yourself in front of people who may not have heard of you (and your business) otherwise.
When you start thinking of very specific conferences you could speak at, look for the ones filled with your target audience. With a room full of your ideal customers, you really can’t ask for a better way to reach them!
4. Experiment with giveaways and promotions.
Even if you’re standing in front of a room full of your ideal audience, speaking at an event does not ensure you’ll get work or sell your product(s) because of it.
However, giveaways or promotions are a great way to hook your audience. Try white papers (that subscribe people to your email list), small freebies (with your information on them!), and other creative ways to grab attention to get a phone call and/or make a sale.
Last but certainly not least, speaking is excellent for great networking.
I always say: even if I haven’t made a sale as a result of a conference, if I make one good connection, that will often lead to a sale in the future. In that regard, it makes the time and energy used for the speaking engagement entirely worth it in my mind.
As a speaker, you’re even that much more likely to do great networking, as plenty of your audience members will want to chat or have questions. (For my introverts out there, this is great news for you: you’ll have people coming to you, not the other way around!)
If you’ve never thought about speaking at an event – or are perhaps a little nervous to do so – these five reasons should definitely convince you to consider speaking. Start small and grow from there. You’ll only benefit your business!
