How to Get the Most Out of the Next Business Conference You Attend

Think back to the last conference you attended. How much of the information you learned did you retain post-conference? How much did you put into place or practice?

While you’re not going to remember everything you learned at an event, there are ways to better retain and prioritize so that you can get the most out of the conference possible. Here’s how.

Define your goal

Prior to stepping into what may become a very long and overwhelming few days, decide what you want to take away from the event. It could be one takeaway or several.

Keeping your goal in mind will help you focus on prioritizing throughout the conference so you don’t get bogged down in unnecessary information and, instead, what you want to walk away with.

Consider what’s going to give you the best bang for your buck

How else can you benefit from a conference? Determine this in advance, as well.

Should you decide to speak at the conference, you’ll certainly get additional benefits. Not only will you be able to engage a new audience; you may also receive free admission, be paid, and receive additional benefits other attendees to not have.

Another way to get more bang for your conference buck? Acquire a table at an expo. This way, you’ll be able to promote your business to attendees in a unique way.

Take notes in the way that makes sense for you

When I’m at a conference, I love live blogging. Past taking traditional notes, I find that this helps me process the information that I’m hearing the best and helps give me the takeaways I’m looking for.

Figure out what works for you: consider bringing your computer over a pad and paper if you like to type. Or, if you’d rather listen to content later, record sessions on your phone or a voice recording device.

Take advantage of networking opportunities

Conferences always have additional networking opportunities – whether after hours or during times in between sessions.

Take advantage of networking wherever you can get it. Remember, you’re surrounded with colleagues, potential clients, and experts in your field. Whether you do business with other attendees or simply learn something new, you’ll find event networking has boundless value.
